I've always been told as a motor gets older, the wear and clearances/tolerances of that said motor become sloppy. Every vehicle I have owned, once it gets over the 100k mile mark, has been given the 20-50w oil(usually Castrol GTX). Oil changed every 2500-3000 miles. I have had no issues with blowing motors although I did detonate my TT a couple years ago on a highway pull. The bottom ends of all my cars are in perfect shape and Ash actually commented on how good the bottom end of my tt motor was and he was like" what weight of oil do you use?" So personally I use 20-50w. Always have, always will.
